Home Gym Must-Haves
When Sweat Inspire Sisterhood was founded almost 10 years ago (HOW?!?), I set out to create an effective workout program that women could complete from home with minimal space, equipment, and time. We used a yoga mat, set of dumbbells, and YouTube, and since then hundreds of women have seen first hand that a home gym doesn’t have to require an overwhelming amount of gear or thousands of dollars invested. With a few versatile and effective pieces of equipment, you can create a functional space that supports your fitness goals. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned athlete, these essentials will elevate your at-home workouts:
Essential At-Home Workout Equipment
Yoga Mat
A high-quality yoga mat is a non-negotiable. It provides the foundation for many workouts, from yoga and Pilates to core exercises and stretching. Look for a mat with sufficient cushioning and grip to ensure comfort and safety. I love the Lululemon mats for their thickness and durability, but there are other brands with similar quality at a lower price point available on Amazon.Dumbbells (Variety of Weights)
A selection of dumbbells in different weights is crucial for strength training. Lighter weights (3-8 lbs) are perfect for toning and high-rep exercises, while heavier ones (15+ lbs) help build muscle and challenge your strength as you progress and get stronger. Adjustable dumbbells like these can save space while offering flexibility for you over time.Resistance Bands
Resistance bands are affordable, portable, and incredibly versatile. They’re excellent for targeting specific muscle groups, like glutes, quads, and arms. Plus, they’re perfect for adding intensity to bodyweight exercises. I prefer fabric bands because they stay put during movements and won’t roll up or snap in a deep squat.Good Sneakers
A supportive, high-quality pair of sneakers is key for preventing injury and providing the stability needed for a variety of workouts. Choose sneakers designed for your workout style, whether it’s cardio, strength training, or cross-training. See my Shoe Guide blog for more information about choosing the right shoe for your foot strike and workout style.
Optional Upgrades for Your Home Gym
Workout Bench
A sturdy bench can expand your strength-training options. Use it for step-ups, chest presses, or incline/decline exercises.Treadmill or Cardio Machine
For cardio enthusiasts, investing in a treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bike is a game-changer. These machines allow for high-intensity workouts regardless of the weather…especially if you live in the Midwest like most of our SIS members!Weight Rack or Storage System
As your equipment collection grows, a weight rack or storage system can help keep your workout space organized and safe.
